School Nutrition Association Legislative Action Center

Idaho delegates attended the 46th Legislative Action Conference (LAC), March 4th – 6th, 2018.

"Highlights of the conference were the USDA shared a few updates, a visit from Kevin Censky (from Sonny Perdue office), and of course the Hill visits.
USDA was recapping the waiver on the sodium and whole grain. Kevin Censky told us that Sonny is working hard to simplify our programs and helping with the sodium and whole grain guidelines.
We went to the Hill with the position paper on

  • Oppose any effort to block grant school meal programs
  • Support H.R. 3738, the Healthy Breakfast Help Kids Learn Act, to provide 6 cents in USDA Foods for every school breakfast served.
  • Continue to monitor and support UDSA’s work to simplify overly burdensome child nutrition mandates to improve efficiencies and reduce costs. The final rule on school meal program flexibility should: 1. Maintain the Target 1 sodium levels and eliminate future targets. 2. Restore the initial requirement that at least half of grains offered with school meals be whole grain rich.

We visited with the aides of Simpson and Crapo, Risch dropped in for a bit but it was a busy day, Labrador sat & visited with us for some time. No one but Labrador expressed options on the Position paper.  Overall it was a good day and a great conference."

ACDA (American Commodity Distribution Association) Policy update:

"ACDA AND SNA JOINT SUPPORT FOR HEALTHY BREAKFASTS HELP KIDS LEARN ACT

The American Commodity Distribution Association (ACDA) and the School Nutrition Association (SNA) are pleased to inform you of our joint support for H.R. 3738, the Healthy Breakfasts Help Kids Learn Act of 2017, to provide an additional 6 cents in commodity support for the School Breakfast Program (SBP). The provision of breakfast commodity assistance is a top priority for both professional associations and has been for many years.

It is important that there be a strong demonstration of support for the Healthy Breakfasts Help Kids Learn Act of 2017, and for this reason we urge you to contact your own congressional representative to urge him or her to join Congressmen McGovern and Davis as cosponsors of this bill."  See the full letter here.
